At Midnight Sun Oncology, we provide excellent, personalized care for people with cancer and blood disorders who live in the Ma-Su Valley. Conveniently located at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, our facilities include a clinic, lab, chemotherapy infusion room and a caring staff to serve your needs. As Mat-Su Valley residents, our doctors know and work closely with your referring doctors. We?re right here in the Mat-Su Valley for you.

Our Doctors

Drs. Lawson, Suarez and Zimmermann are board certified in Medical Oncology and Internal Medicine and members of the American Society of Clinical Oncologists, American Society of Hematology, American Medical Association and American College of Physicians.

Dr. Larson

Larry Lawson, MD

After moving to Alaska in 2005 to treat cancer patients, Dr. Lawson established his own practice, Midnight Sun Oncology, in 2007. He travels to Homer twice monthly to treat oncology patients at South Peninsula Hospital.

Dr. Lawson earned his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine, completed a residency program in Internal Medical at Cleveland Clinic in Florida, and a Medical Oncology fellowship at Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans. He received honors and completed research projects at the Cleveland Clinic and the Ochsner Clinic Foundation.

Dr. Suarez

Jose Suarez, MD

Jose Suarez, MD, was born in Cuba and immigrated to the United States in 1995. He completed his residency program in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in affiliation with Jersey City Medical Center in 2002 and was later a fellow in Medical Oncology at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans.

Following training, Dr. Suarez treated patients in a thriving oncology practice in Miami for five years. In September of 2009, he accepted an invitation to join Midnight Sun Oncology and relocated his wife and three young children to the Mat-Su Valley where they have been happily exploring Alaska ever since.

Dr. Zimmerman

John Zimmermann, MD

Dr. Zimmermann grew up in Colorado and earned his MD degree from Ross University, where he was a classmate of Dr. Lawson. After internship and residency training at Nassau University Medical Center in Long Island, NY, he completed an Allergy/Immunology fellowship and joined a private allergy practice in Atlanta where he worked for four years. When the opportunity to join his good friend in Alaska came, Dr. Zimmermann completed a medical oncology fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta and relocated with his wife and young daughter to the Wasilla area.

Medical Staff

Paula English, RN, Infusion Nurse

In 30 years of nursing, Paula has worked in ICU, infusion and oncology, and in dialysis. She earned her BSN at Southwest Missouri State University, is an oncology certified nurse (OCN) and a certified registered nurse infusionist (CRNI). In her spare time, Paula and her husband raise sled dogs.

Sue Ebner, RN, Infusion Nurse

Sue has been a registered nurse (RN) since 1985 after graduating from Conestoga College. She has extensive experience including bone marrow transplant, and hematology and infusion therapy. Her certifications include Certified Health Promotion Director, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation and Bone Marrow Transplant/Chemotherapy Program. Sue is currently studying in a Canadian Oncology Nurse Specialist program.

Stacy Nardini, Medical Assistant

Stacy is a medical assistant and has been working at Midnight Sun Oncology since it opened. She takes patient histories and vital signs, handles referrals, schedules appointments and draws labs. Stacy is a lifelong resident of Alaska. During the summer, she and her husband spend their free time enjoying the outdoors.

April Miller, Phlebotomist

April received her EMT-B phlebotomy certifications from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in 2002, with concentrations in oncology and pediatrics and has worked in lab, hospital and office settings. A recent transplant to Alaska, April is an accomplished marksman and avid motorcycle enthusiast who enjoys the outdoors and extreme sports.

Kelly Higgins, Medical Assistant/Receptionist

Kelly, a long-time Alaskan resident, has worked in the medical industry for several years and in customer service for most of her work life. A mother of four daughters, she is an avid runner in snow, rain, sleet and hail, who enjoys running in half-marathons for a variety of charities. She and her husband are currently building a cabin in Copper Center.

Administrative Staff

Jessica Walden, Receptionist

Jessica has worked at Midnight Sun Oncology since 2005. She earned a degree in Office Technology from Clover Park Technical College in Lakewood, Washington and before that worked in the mortgage, construction and telecommunications industries. She and her husband have traveled to Mexico, Hawaii and several states in the lower 48, as well as Europe on their honeymoon. They welcomed their first child in 2010.

Nina Stone, Receptionist

Nina has been working for Midnight Sun Oncology for a total of three years. Her previous experience includes clerical work in the real estate, construction and hospitality industries. Nina is also a wife, mother of two sons, and a published author.

Jan Branham, Bookkeeper

A lifelong Alaskan and Wasilla resident since 1981, Jan worked as an office manager for 11 years before coming to Midnight Sun Oncology. The proud mother of two teenage sons, she enjoys and spend lots of time with them in the Alaskan outdoors.
